LP SmartSide vs. Vinyl Siding: Which Is Right for Minnesota Homes?
Two Good Options. One Climate That Makes the Choice Clearer.
LP SmartSide and vinyl are the two most common siding choices for Twin Cities homeowners replacing their exterior. Both are legitimate options. Both have real advantages. But Minnesota's climate — freeze-thaw cycles, hail exposure, and extreme temperature swings — creates conditions where the differences between them matter more than they would in a milder part of the country.
Honest Exteriors installs both. This comparison is based on how each material actually performs in our climate, not on which one we prefer to sell.
At a Glance: LP SmartSide vs. Vinyl
LP SmartSide
Engineered wood — SmartGuard treated
- Material: Engineered wood strands, resins, wax, zinc borate
- Appearance: Deep wood-grain texture, indistinguishable from wood at distance
- Color: Factory-primed; field-painted any color
- Impact resistance: Strong — handles hail and impact well
- Cold climate: Maintains flexibility at temperature extremes
- Maintenance: Periodic repainting (every 10–15 years)
- Warranty: 5-year substrate / 50-year transferable
- Cost: Higher upfront — 20–40% more than vinyl installed
Vinyl Siding
PVC — color molded through
- Material: PVC with UV inhibitors
- Appearance: Plastic look detectable up close; premium lines improve this
- Color: Molded in — limited palette, cannot be repainted reliably
- Impact resistance: Can crack from hail or impact, especially in cold
- Cold climate: Becomes more brittle at very low temperatures
- Maintenance: Low — periodic washing only
- Warranty: Varies by manufacturer — typically 20–40 years
- Cost: Lower upfront — the more budget-friendly option
How Each Material Handles Minnesota's Climate
Freeze-thaw cycling
Minnesota averages 40 to 60 freeze-thaw cycles per year. Water that penetrates small gaps in siding freezes, expands, and thaws repeatedly — stressing the material and any caulking or seams over time. LP SmartSide's engineered wood substrate handles this cycling well. Vinyl becomes stiffer and more brittle as temperatures drop, which increases the likelihood of cracking if the siding is struck during cold weather. Premium vinyl products have improved in this regard, but the difference remains meaningful in Minnesota's winter conditions.
Hail exposure
The Twin Cities averages more than 60 reportable hail days per year. LP SmartSide's engineered wood composition handles hail impact better than standard vinyl — vinyl can crack or dent from hail strikes, particularly at colder temperatures when it's less flexible. If your home is in a hail-exposed area (which most of the metro is), LP SmartSide's impact resistance is a real advantage.
Temperature swings
Minnesota temperatures can swing 50 degrees or more within a single day during shoulder seasons. All siding materials expand and contract with temperature — how much they move, and how well they handle that movement, varies. LP SmartSide is dimensionally stable across a wide temperature range. Vinyl expands and contracts more significantly, which can cause visible waviness on sun-exposed elevations if not installed with proper spacing.
Moisture
LP SmartSide is treated with a zinc borate process (SmartGuard) that resists moisture absorption, fungal decay, and insects. When properly installed and maintained, it holds up well to Minnesota's wet springs and heavy snowpack. Vinyl does not absorb water — it's inherently moisture-resistant — but moisture can still get behind panels through poor installation, failing caulk, or improperly flashed penetrations, causing damage to the substrate underneath regardless of the siding material.
Category-by-Category Comparison
| Category | LP SmartSide | Vinyl |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Edge: LP — Deep wood-grain texture, substantial feel, indistinguishable from wood at distance. | Improved in premium lines, but plastic appearance is detectable up close. Shallower texture than LP. |
| Cold climate performance | Edge: LP — Maintains flexibility across temperature extremes. Less prone to cracking from cold-weather impact. | Becomes more brittle at very low temperatures. More likely to crack if struck during cold weather. |
| Hail resistance | Edge: LP — Engineered wood handles impact better than PVC, especially in cold conditions. | Can crack or dent from hail, particularly in cold. Premium thicker panels perform better than builder-grade. |
| Upfront cost | Higher — typically 20–40% more than vinyl installed on an average home. | Edge: Vinyl — The more budget-friendly option upfront. Significant savings on larger homes. |
| Maintenance | Requires periodic repainting, typically every 10–15 years depending on exposure and paint quality. | Edge: Vinyl — Periodic washing only. No painting required. |
| Color flexibility | Edge: LP — Field-painted any color. Can be repainted to a different color in the future. | Color is molded in — limited palette. Cannot be reliably repainted. Color cannot change without replacement. |
| Warranty | 5-year substrate / 50-year transferable. Requires proper installation and maintenance. | Varies by manufacturer — typically 20–40 years. Read the fine print on what voids coverage. |
| Long-term value | Edge: LP — Higher resale impact, longer lifespan, and repaintability add up over 20+ years of ownership. | Lower upfront cost but shorter aesthetic lifespan. Fading becomes noticeable by years 15–20. |
Maintenance: The Real Difference Over Time
The most common reason homeowners choose vinyl is lower maintenance — no painting required. That's a real advantage, and for homeowners who prioritize minimal upkeep, vinyl delivers it. But the maintenance picture over a full ownership period is more nuanced than it first appears.
LP SmartSide maintenance
LP SmartSide needs periodic repainting, typically every 10 to 15 years depending on sun exposure, paint quality, and climate. The paint needs to be maintained — if it fails and moisture gets into the substrate, repair costs increase. Annual inspection of caulk joints and any areas where panels meet trim is good practice. The upside: when the paint fades or you want to change the color, you simply repaint. The siding itself doesn't need to be replaced.
Vinyl maintenance
Vinyl requires periodic washing — typically a seasonal rinse — and inspection of caulk and any sealant at penetrations. It doesn't need painting and doesn't rot. The downside: when vinyl fades (typically noticeable by years 15 to 20), you cannot repaint it reliably. At that point, replacement is the only way to refresh the appearance. If your siding is in a hail-exposed area and sustains damage, cracked vinyl panels need to be replaced — and matching color on weathered panels can be difficult if the product line has changed.
The color matching problem. If vinyl siding is damaged — from hail, impact, or other causes — matching the color of weathered panels with new ones is often impossible. Vinyl fades at different rates on sun-exposed vs. shaded elevations. LP SmartSide, being painted, can be color-matched and touched up without visible inconsistency.
Which Should You Choose?
LP SmartSide makes more sense if:
- You plan to stay in the home long-term (10+ years)
- Appearance and curb appeal are important to you
- Your home is in a hail-exposed area — which most of the Twin Cities metro is
- You want color flexibility now or the ability to change color later
- You're concerned about cold-weather impact performance
Vinyl makes more sense if:
- Upfront budget is the primary constraint
- You prioritize minimal maintenance above other factors
- You're planning to sell within the next 10 years and want to minimize investment
- You're choosing a premium vinyl product, not builder-grade
If you're on the fence: The right answer often comes down to how long you're staying and how much the appearance matters to you. For a home you plan to own for 15+ years in a hail-active part of the metro, LP SmartSide's performance advantages typically justify the additional upfront cost. For a near-term project with a tight budget, quality vinyl installed correctly is a legitimate choice.
