Roofing — Shingle Comparison

GAF vs. Owens Corning Shingles: What's the Difference for Minnesota Homeowners?

Published July 1, 2026 Honest Exteriors — Eden Prairie, MN

Two Great Brands. One Honest Comparison.

GAF and Owens Corning together account for more than half the asphalt shingles installed on American homes. If you're getting a new roof in the Twin Cities, there's a good chance your contractor is going to recommend one of these two brands — and a reasonable chance they'll recommend whichever one they prefer for business reasons rather than because it's measurably better for your specific situation.

Honest Exteriors is both GAF Certified and Owens Corning Preferred. We install both. That means we don't have a financial reason to steer you one direction. This guide covers where the two brands actually differ, where they're effectively identical, and the one scenario where Minnesota's hail exposure makes the choice clear.

The honest summary upfront: On core specs — wind rating, fire rating, and shingle lifespan — GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration are nearly identical. The meaningful differences are in algae warranty length, hail performance data, and nailing technology. For most Minnesota homeowners, either is an excellent choice. The installer matters more than the brand.

GAF Timberline HDZ vs. Owens Corning Duration: Flagship to Flagship

The fair comparison is flagship to flagship — GAF's Timberline HDZ against Owens Corning's Duration series. Both are the standard architectural shingle recommendation in the mid-price tier for most Twin Cities homes.

The Minnesota-Specific Factor: Hail

The Twin Cities averages more than 60 reportable hail days per year. That's the single most important climate variable that shifts this comparison for Minnesota homeowners.

When it comes to standard Class 4 impact-resistant shingles — the upgrade most relevant for Minnesota's hail exposure — Owens Corning's Duration STORM has a meaningful edge in independent testing. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) uses realistic ice hail rather than the steel balls in standard UL 2218 testing. Duration STORM scores 8.0 vs. 6.7 for GAF Timberline HDZ in IBHS testing — a real performance gap, not a marketing claim.

If you're replacing your roof and hail resistance is the priority — which it should be for most Minnesota homeowners — Duration STORM is worth the conversation. Both brands also offer Class 4 products, but this is where the OC line has a documented performance advantage.

That said: if you're not upgrading to Class 4 and you're choosing between standard Timberline HDZ and standard Duration, the hail performance difference is negligible. Both are architectural shingles with similar real-world impact resistance at the standard tier.

The Warranty Difference That Actually Matters

Both brands market "lifetime limited warranties." The lifetime portion covers manufacturing defects for the original homeowner and reads similarly for both. The differences are in what you have to do to activate the best coverage — and what voids it.

GAF's top warranty tier: Golden Pledge

Requires installation by a GAF Master Elite contractor — the top 3% of the contractor network. Covers both materials and workmanship. Requires a complete GAF system: shingles, underlayment, starter strips, ridge caps, and ventilation all from GAF. Mixing brands voids coverage. The WindProven unlimited wind warranty is available within this tier.

Owens Corning's top warranty tier: Platinum Protection

Requires installation by a Platinum Preferred contractor. Covers materials and workmanship. Similarly requires the full OC system — shingles with OC accessories. OC's Platinum Preferred network is smaller than GAF's Master Elite network, so finding a qualifying installer can be harder in some markets. In the Twin Cities metro, both are available.

What voids both warranties

The most common warranty denial across both brands is the same: inadequate attic ventilation. If your attic isn't properly ventilated to manufacturer specs, neither GAF nor Owens Corning will honor a warranty claim on shingles that fail prematurely. Any contractor installing either brand should assess and address attic ventilation as part of the replacement scope.

The installer caveat applies to both brands equally. A GAF Timberline HDZ roof installed incorrectly outperforms nothing. An Owens Corning Duration roof installed correctly by a certified Preferred contractor will outlast a premium GAF roof installed by an uncertified crew. The brand on the shingle matters less than the certification of the installer and the quality of the installation.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose GAF Timberline HDZ if:

  • Color selection is important — GAF has significantly more options
  • You want the longest algae warranty — 25 years vs. OC's 10
  • You want the WindProven unlimited wind warranty with a full GAF system
  • Your contractor is GAF Master Elite certified

Choose Owens Corning Duration if:

  • Hail resistance is your top priority — Duration STORM has better IBHS test scores
  • You want the most installer-friendly nailing technology (SureNail reduces installation errors)
  • You're upgrading to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles specifically
  • Your contractor is OC Platinum Preferred certified

Either brand works well if:

Frequently Asked Questions — GAF vs. Owens Corning
For standard architectural shingles, both perform comparably in Minnesota's climate. If hail resistance is the priority — which it should be given the Twin Cities averages more than 60 reportable hail days per year — Owens Corning Duration STORM has a documented edge in independent IBHS testing (8.0 vs. 6.7 for standard GAF Timberline HDZ). For algae resistance and color selection, GAF leads. For most homeowners choosing between standard mid-tier products, the installer's certification and the quality of the installation matter more than the brand on the shingle.
Both offer tiered warranty programs requiring installation by certified contractors for top-tier coverage. GAF's Golden Pledge (requires Master Elite installer) and Owens Corning's Platinum Protection (requires Platinum Preferred installer) are the top tiers for each brand — both covering materials and workmanship. GAF's algae warranty is 25 years vs. OC's 10. GAF offers a WindProven unlimited wind warranty with a complete GAF system. OC allows warranty transfer within 60 days of sale vs. GAF's one-year window. Both warranties are voided by inadequate attic ventilation — the most common real-world denial reason for both brands.
At the flagship level — Timberline HDZ vs. Duration — they are very close in quality. Both carry Class A fire ratings, 130 mph wind warranties, and lifetime limited coverage. The differences are meaningful but incremental: GAF leads on algae warranty length and color selection; OC leads on hail performance data and nailing technology. The performance gap between a well-installed GAF roof and a well-installed OC roof is far smaller than the gap between a well-installed roof and a poorly-installed roof of either brand.
For Class 4 impact-resistant shingles — the category designed specifically for hail resistance — Owens Corning Duration STORM has a documented performance advantage in IBHS independent testing, scoring 8.0 versus 6.7 for GAF Timberline HDZ. GAF also offers Class 4 products (Timberline AS II SBS Modified). Both are significantly better than standard architectural shingles in hail events. Class 4 shingles also typically qualify Minnesota homeowners for insurance premium discounts of 20 to 30 percent, which can offset the upgrade cost within a few years.
Yes — but more because of warranty access than product quality. The top warranty tiers for both GAF and Owens Corning require certified installers. A GAF Master Elite contractor can offer the Golden Pledge warranty; an OC Platinum Preferred contractor can offer Platinum Protection. If your contractor isn't certified for the brand they're installing, you're limited to the base manufacturer's warranty, which provides less coverage. Beyond warranties, installation quality — proper nailing, ventilation, and system components — matters more than brand selection for real-world roof performance.
